BIRD ON A WIRE: A FIVE CITY SYMPHONY

A Five City Symphony, is a two-channel film projection accompanied by a live music performance. Using a mobile phone, a still camera, a video recorder and sometimes Super 8 and 16mm, Flanders has recorded the everyday in the extraordinary. Combining music, improvisation and projection, Bird on a Wire probes the current anxiety and condition of people in relation to space, notions of home, displacement, exile and war. Flanders teamed up with acclaimed jazz/experimental Canadian musician Marilyn Lerner, and artist /filmmaker Cynthia Madansky who edited this work. Commissioned by the Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek, Bird on a Wire premiered at the 2006 Berlin International Film Festival and continues to be performed internationally.
